Upper Elementary
The Innovators program, designed for students aged 9 to 12, marks a period of deep intellectual mastery and personal growth. In our Upper Elementary classrooms, students in 4th, 5th, and 6th Grade refine their ability to synthesize complex information, transitioning from guided exploration to independent, high-level academic research and innovative problem-solving.
At Spell Well Montessori, we cultivate the 'Innovator' spirit by encouraging students to take full ownership of their learning journey. Our curriculum integrates advanced academics with real-world applications, fostering ethical leadership, advanced critical thinking, and social responsibility. Here, students don't just study the world—they prepare to lead it, developing the resilience and creative vision necessary to thrive in an ever-changing global society.
Mastery & Creative Inquiry
Upper Elementary, (Innovators) (Ages9–12)
Our Upper Elementary curriculum is specifically designed to meet the developmental needs of children entering Maria Montessori’s "Second Plane of Development." At this stage, students transition from concrete learning to abstract thinking, mastering advanced concepts in Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies.
The Transition to Abstract Thinking
Building upon the foundations laid in Lower Elementary, students dive deeper into advanced geometry, and sophisticated literary analysis. Relying more heavily on books, digital resources, and research tools, our students learn to navigate information independently, preparing them to confidently tackle the challenges of Middle School.
Cosmic Education & Global Citizenship
Students explore the "Fundamental Needs of Humans" across history, helping students nderstand the interconnectedness of all people and time periods. Within our “prepared environment”, leadership and collaboration are actively encouraged, fostering a community of compassionate global citizens.
Science in the Living Classroom
At Spell Well, science is experienced firsthand. Our students engage deeply with the natural world on our campus through a curriculum designed to spark lifelong curiosity:
- Gardening & Botany: Students utilize our campus gardens to study life cycles, cultivation, and environmental stewardship.
- Zoology & Astronomy: Lessons ranging from the animal kingdom to the wonders of the universe foster a sense of "cosmic responsibility."
- Integrated Technology: While we embrace modern tools, we protect the art of handwriting and cursive. Students use laptops for research, utilizing interactive digital workbooks to access textbook content and homework seamlessly.
- Annual Science Fair: Students apply the scientific method by designing, executing, and presenting original research.
Educating the Whole Child
We balance rigorous academics with meaningful enrichment to ensure every child grows with confidence and independence:
- The Art Class: Art serves as a vital communication tool. We prioritize the creative process—sensory exploration and mark-making—over the result to build motor skills and a unique visual language.
- Academic Competitions: Students participate in the Spelling Bee to celebrate literacy, expand vocabulary, and practice healthy sportsmanship.
- Specialized Instruction: Our program includes Spanish and Mandarin, alongside Physical Education, music, dance and ballet program.
- Proven Excellence: By utilizing personalized tools like IXL alongside a hands-on Montessori approach, our students consistently perform at or above national benchmarks.
